A podcast of my choice

Lip Gloss and Laptops: Episodes
The weekly beauty and cosmetics podcast for the thinking woman, with Kerry Anne and Airdrie from Vancouver, B.C. 57th episode

It is two women talking about their interests and things they have done for the week and talking about one of their hamsters to create a feeling of realism and interactive listening, they create the feeling that they are talking to you. The women gives the websites which you should go to see if you want further information so they can promote their website and their sponcers websites. that is when they start talkin about how to aply lipsgloss and makeup with precision. they cover many different issues about fashion and magazines and about the stigma towards women being interested (obsessed) with makeup. obviously this will appeal only to certain niche audiences because everyones interests are differenet. but with this podcast they can distribute their ideas via the web rather than radio or magazine, and using real people speak is much more interactive than reading from a magazine.

by using a podcast and giving audiences more insight into the program they are listening to tehy are increasing customer loyalty as they feel they are getting more from the podcast than the actual radio station. the podcast allows you to listen to things in a non-linear fashion aswell.

  • convienience the podcast is portable and plays on any mp3 player
  • vertical integration the marketing of the product across different platforms
  • non-linear audiences can listen to what they want, when they want and wherever they want.
  • niche audiences it covers a large range of audiences

new psp

The NEW PSP!!!!!!!!!

PSP short for Play Station Portable offers consumers more powerful features beside those that are presented to them by the traditional play stations.

PSP is more enjoyable because of its many features: games, music, videos, and photos. its portable and compact for convenience and can be stored easily. The PSP system has a high-resolution screen so the consumer is receiveing a high quality of viewing as well as a cutting edge-connectivity and Internet browser (convergence). This is more upgraded because it contains chips that are well-equipped and suited for the system to make the process of whatever you wish to do as fast as it can (fast).

Unlike the typical play station that you have whose main feature is only for your games, this invention has a lot to offer.

Here are the best-noted services that the Portable Play Station offers the viewer.

• On Photos. Capturing memories will be one of its best features. With this PSP you can now be able to store digital photos with proven high resolution that helps it to appear clearer (better quality). It has a wide range of memory for storage. By the use of the image transfer feature; you can also transfer photos with your friends and so you can share memories. Modifying your own wall paper is also one feature, this is a good example of personalisation.

• On Music. Apart from downloading your most wanted songs to your own Portable Play Station System you can also be able to take a look at the full version of concerts being held of your favourite stars and out of sight footages. This can be done through the Memory Stick.

• On Video. VCD and DVD are now replaced now with the new PSP. its portability allows you to take it anwhere and watching it on the relatively large screen of the psp offering higher quality.

• On Games. This is what the younger audiences look for in a psp. This is the most requested service of play station for them anyway. The big screen of the PSP gives them a realistic view and brings gaming to reality through the amazing graphics.

• On Browser. This is another benefit for the consumer; it will offer you the greatest opportunity to surf on the net. All that you want to research will be made available for you. This replaces internet and actually makes it easier to surf the net while using the psp.

This is a great example for convergence. getting more packed into less. The psp replaces a computer and other conventional technology because it can now connect with the internet and with extra accessories that can be plugged in, there will be no need for tvs of computers.

PlayStation Portable is currently available in 6 colors: black, ceramic white, pink, metallic blue, silver, and champagne. this allows for consumers to choose their look which created a feeling of control. (personalisation)

myspace

MYSPACE!!
below is an example of a myspace page:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=46231301

Meet people from your area in the country and keep in touch. Includes blog, forums, email, groups, games and events.

Myspace is a network site used by many to interact and find others into the same hobbies, or to just make friends. it links people from all over the world and allows you to put out your own oppinion and log your dayly routine. The website is highly interactive and users can interact with their friends, leave comments message or photo comments.

The audiences of myspace are teenagers and young adults although there are older people on it too, there are also communities for many secondary schools available, latymer being one of the biggest!!! To have a myspace profile you need to be over 14 so this limits the audience to abve this age, however there is always a chance to cheat and i have talked to many 11 year olds who have snuck their way in!!

The website allows users a high level of personalisation. a user can create their own profile with pictures video and text. The users profile can be personalised with the users own style with backgrounds, music, formats, colour schemes and texts. my myspace use to be awfully dull until i spruced it up!!!

companys and institutes have realised how vast myspace is and the wide audiences that it reaches, therefore they advertise on peoples homepages and the home, also giveing details about deals they can recieve and ipod phones:

Myspace has also been used by unsigned bands and artists to promote themselves to fellow myspacers. the site allows them to upload their song on their profile and other users can listen to them and leave a comment if they wish, this is good to build up a bands reputation and sometimes they are recognised and signed as record deals, this happened to my friend who sings pop but she didn't make it in the pop world (i bought a copy of her cd though).

There are also many fan profiles created by users to keep fans updated with their favourite bands, singers, actors shows, movies, comics, characters and other celebrities. Bands such as 'evergrey' often have profiles with information on gigs, concerts and albums, thus allowing them free advertising directly to their audiences.

They can use this to create more fans and a higher profile of their band. There are many bands and artist profiles from a wide range of genre not only niche music or genre. Many night clubs have pages, as well as small business, this is a way to show people who are interested what they have to offer, and because you can upload videos and pictures people have visual representations of what they could be missing out on..

'evergrey's' homepage on myspace is an brilliant example because they have taken advantage of everything the site has to offer.

they have their picture in the very middle of the page showing all the band members and individual photos of them down the edge, they are all very high quality photos and the text is easy to read. the page is very cool with a greenish blue frame and a brownish cream interiou background. this is an example of personalisation and makes the page far more asthetically pleasing and interesting to look at,

therefore attracting more viewers.

the band has uploaded some of their videos which they have made. it is easy to access them with a simple click and there is good sound and visuals.

they are also able to show the bands that have influenced them over the years (which in turn promote those bands to niche audiences with similar tastes)

they can show people their CDs and their concerts and you can eaven contact any of the band members where they can buy tickets (online shopping)

you have clear links to other parts of their pages such as 'other photos', 'making of the video' and 'leave a coment' or alternatively you can just leave a message on the message board main page at the bottom of the screne and show your support. this allows for them to recieve feedback and allows them to progress in the media world.

Ipod

Ipod

This is a good example of convergence because it has a multiple of features all packed into one small device. The ipod includes:
  • Up to 20 hours of battery life refers to 80GB model and music playback.

  • 1GB, actual formatted capacity less.

  • Video with high qualtiy audio and visual.

  • Photo capacity is based on iPod-viewable photos transferred from iTunes.

  • 20,000 songs refers 4 minutes per song.

features:

  • games
  • music
  • videos
  • photos
  • playlisting

Ipod is light, thin and easy to carry around making it a convenient item to have (portability). It has demolished the use of cds because all the owner needs to do is download the music or film straight form the internet to the device.

personalisation-people who get an ipod have the choice in what songs they want to hear, they can create playlists which allows easy access to what they want when they want. this makes the consumer feel more in control. you can also buy additional pieces to put with your ipod such as speakers and 'socks'. the speakers are a good example for how consumers must buy something extra from teh same brand or company because they are specifically designed to only fit in or except that type of technology. this is good for industry.
you can customise your ipod with socks or skins, but they initaially come in black, white or silver, this is an example of personelisation.

“Now that you can buy movies from the iTunes Store and sync them to your iPod, the whole world is your theater. With a 30GB or 80GB iPod in hand, those movies fit comfortably next to TV shows, new iPod games, podcasts, audiobooks, photo albums, and, of course, an entire library of music — up to 20,000 songs, in fact. Now starting at $249, iPod is a pocket-size prodigy. This an exelent esample of convergence and how we can get far more into a smaller space”

audience- It would be popular among business men and teenagers because of its convenience and portability. teenagers would enjoy the fact that they can make their own playlists. However adults and old people could use them easily, it’s just a matter of will they, it may be becuase they are intimidated with something so small which holds so much inside.

Definitions of Podcast on the Web:

Podcasting, a portmanteau of Apple's "iPod" and "broadcasting", is a method of publishing files to the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed and receive new files automatically by subscription, usually at no cost. It first became popular in late 2004, used largely for audio files.
Podcasts are downloadable and not only are radio shows but speechs, lectures or literally anything recorded, they all can be made into a podcast. Podcasts can be put on a portable media device like an iPod to be played on-the-go. Anyone can make a podcast and it’s free to download a podcast, so uptake has been very fast indeed. Video podcasts use the same technology in distribution and roduction.Podcasting is broadly used to describe any audio file, other than a music track, which is downloaded onto a PC or portable media player or streamed to a PC or wireless-enabled portable media player. However, in the strictest terms, podcasting is the distribution of any audio file via ‘syndication feeds’. This is different because syndication feeds allow the downloading to be automatic so that you receive the podcast as soon as it is updated, using special software to interpret the feed. podcasting is available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection and would be especially fast to download if you have broadband.

Teenagers and adults are the age groups which most use iPods and music downloads and are very good with new technologies. Business people also use iPods for leisure but usually whilst on trains or planes or on the way to or from work. podcasting offers a chance to listen to a show at your leisure at a time to suit you (nonlinear).
older people and oldies: older people can also use podcast, not only to promote themselves but to also learn. there are online courses done through podcasting and both older generations and younger generations use them. older people may be intimidated by using the new technology to recieve the pdcast, but if they overcame that problem then even very old people could use them. podcasts on certain sites also have a 'hearing impaired' button which allows people with bad hearing (usually older generations) to listen to it in peace.

The BBC is a good example of an institution which has used podcasting to test their shows (whether or not they are popular). This has also been taken up by other industries and is a great way to predict whether your show will be successful out on the market/radio.

playlisting and downloading

Playlisting and downloading!!

We have come along way since vinyl and cassettes where everything was actually on tape or on CD and you had to buy the physical matter to possess the music.
These ‘physical’ formats, however, slowly started being replaced by downloaded music available from a number of online music stores such as lime wire or i-tunes. The difference in format which is now digital and no longer actual matter, means that downloading from the internet is easy, cheap and sometimes free.
There is no denying that less space is taken up through downloading than buying chunky CD cases which will just be stored away.
It is easily accessible from various tune downloading sites.
The internet with broadband makes the job simple and lightning fast so that you can have your music in seconds.

This is a non-linear process meaning we can listen to anything we want, when we want it, we no longer have to flick through lots of songs on a CD to try and find our favourite track.
The cost of shipping or packaging is destroyed because everything is sent via the internet.

Although, the only downside would be for people who really like to collect the actually CDs becaise one daythey will be unable to do so.

Older generations may be an example of this audience, because they generally have a hard time letting go of the past. However, teenagers and some adults have taken the swap from physical to digital very well and are creating play lists and downloading. this may not just be because they can, but because the media has shown the advantages of going 'digital' such as HDcinema and sites like kiss where you can listen to radio. the digital times have made life so much easier in everyway.

  • personalisation- allows people to personalize their playlists and choose whatever they want
  • less space used- everythings digitial and so not physical

extras on the dvd

  • Extras on the spirited away DVD

SPIRITED AWAY is an animated wonder that tells the story of a little girl named Chihiro, who gets swept away into a strange and fascinating spirit world with her parents. Once there, her parents are put under a spell and our little heroine must do whatever’s necessary to free them and return back to the human world.

on the actual menu of the dvd you recieve the choice of simply watching the film from the beginning in a linear fashion, or you can skip straight to any scene in the movie so you can watch in a non-linear fashion. this is so much more convenient instead of racing all the way through the movie again to find the place you left off!!

A special two-disc set. Disc 1 features Spirited Away Introduction by John Lasseter, in which the famed Pixar studios giant and executive producer of this film sets the movie up nicely by sharing with the viewer his love of the film and his total admiration of director Miyazaki. Another extra entitled The Art of Spirited Away is a 15-minute interview and behind-the-scenes filled journey by which the producer, director, voice talents and many others who were involved with the film share their thoughts about subjects ranging from the other brilliant works of Miyazaki to the effort it takes to translate an animated film into another language. A few sneak peeks of animated films (including a couple of the director's earlier films) are also thrown in with the rest of the extras on this first disc. This gives a taste of other films you may enjoy, and so is not only promoting the other films but also helping the viewer to see the options that are available to them.

Disc 2 includes The Nippon Television Special-The Making of the Film. This is a forty-minute Japanese special that delves deep inside the life and times of director Hayao Miyazaki. I appreciated this film all the more after witnessing first hand the hard work and dedication that the man puts into his films. You truly get a sense of who Miyazaki is; this special shows him at home, playing with his dog, cooking and being totally involved in almost every single aspect of SPIRITED AWAY. Then there is the Select Storyboard-To-Scene Comparison, which is pretty self-explanatory. It's basically the first ten minutes of the film presented in sequence on storyboards with the option of the English or Japanese languages playing along. I am an artist through and through and i can fully apreciate these types of features because fans or people who aspire to be film makers or animators (like me) get an insight into the fascinating details and effort put into these storyboards. Next up was a five minute ditty called Behind the Microphone which takes you into the studio to witness the fun, the trials and the tribulations of the voice-over actors doing their thing. Finally there are the original Japanese trailers (tons of them, actually) of SPIRITED AWAY. This Giving insight the audience is a great way to promote the film, but it is also beneficial to the viewer because they can get enjoyment from watching how the magic comes to life!

There is an option for English subtitles on all these features, this allows English people to view their favourite movies without confusion, it is shrinking the world and overcoming language barriers.

a fan site which is not official NARUTO!!

FANS UNITE!!!
This is a fan based website for the anime show called NARUTO
i actually met the guy who created it when he came over from america which was such a coincidence. i was wearing a piece of 'naruto' clothing and the guy came up to me. he told me about his website and i knew it all too well!!!

so here it is. it isn't proffesional, but its amazing and it just goes to show how much work some people put into the things they love.

it is obviously for a very select group who enjoy japanese art and have a slight obsession with naruto. (niche audiences)

it allows you to view all new information about the show and the site (blogger). it allows you to comment on this new information by leaving your personal views or to say something funny. this creates a community of people with similar hobbies and allows you to get in touch with people all over the world. (increasing interactivity)

there is every bit of information about teh show, events and future things, it is mindboggeling, i didn't even know some of the things they put on the website.

they offer flash games and films which allows you to interact. they also have quizzes and tests so that you enjoy teh wensite. you can download the manga and the tv show and even a few movies and they are the latest out tehre on the internet so they are up to date!!

you can also download art, fanart and fanfiction(stroies) and you can share your own stuff with others and recieve feedback. this is good for people who are trying to get recognised as artists or writers because they can see if people like their work.

forums allow you to find out what other people think and sets up a connection between you and the rest of 'naruto' world!!! there are also links to other sites relating to anime and manga (japanese art) and also to the show naruto. this gives the audiences a wider range of sites to explore and discover.

the page is beautiful and colour coded with subtle oranges and reds, and a big banner across the screen shows the main character of the show in full atire. it is asthetically pleasing and easy to navigate, however as i said before the site is targeting niche audiences and probably the younger years so everything is user friendly.

this is a good example of fanbased concepts, about how fans get obsessed and create their own means of reaching out. the page is also good to show interactivity and nonlinear viewing because you can interact with all that the website has to offer and you can watch the episodes and the movies when ever you want and find out information about viewing times months before they come out!!
  • interactivity-meeting other people and playing games
  • non-linear-watch and read whatever you want and whenever you want.
  • convergence- getting everything from movies to songs to online books and games all into one place.

the bbc guid to comedy 'BOTTOM' page

Bottom
UK, BBC, Sitcom, colour, 1991
Starring: Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson

Adventures in the sordid life of two of the world's most repellent bachelors. Double-act Rik Mayall and Ade Edmondson, who have both enjoyed individual successes, wrote and performed this show which tapped the anarchic, sick, violent slapstick style of their earlier stage act.
As Richie Richard and Eddie Hitler, they portrayed a pair of nasty, unhygienic, vicious, self-
centred, arrogant slobs who share a squalid flat and spend as much time ridiculing, irritating and maiming each other as they do terrifying any poor misfortunates who stray into their lives. Hopelessly inadequate at the nitty-gritty of everyday life, the pair pour all their energies into drinking, gluttony, masturbating and gambling. Episodes often explode into violence with the pair clouting each other with heavy industrial equipment, or causing eye-watering pain to each others genitalia with pliers or similar instruments. Explosions and fires were also commonplace.

Bottom was intentionally and unashamedly juvenile, with even its title pointing to the schoolboy nature of its humour. Mayall and Edmondson had originally named the show Your Bottom and delighted in the double entendres that it might present (eg, 'I saw Your Bottom on television last night'), but, eventually, they settled on the more succinct Bottom and instead derived pleasure from the suffixed episode titles (eg, Bottom: Smells, and Bottom: 's Up). Its gross bad taste alienated some viewers but, like a pile of mildewing Y-fronts, Bottom wasn't short of support, as proven by the success of its numerous British theatre tours and the 1999 release of a full-length movie version, Guest House Paradiso, in which Richie and Eddie run the nastiest, smelliest, most squalid hotel in the world. (Written by Mayall and Edmondson, directed by Edmondson.)
Rude, crude and of dubious social value, Bottom was nevertheless a lively and funny attempt at producing something that only existed to make people laugh and had no moral standpoint or base in reality. Part of its grotesque allure was the strange fascination of the sleazy lifestyle it portrayed, which caused viewers to squirm but kept them hooked, much as the squeamish may be drawn to watch a televised operation.
*Note. The sixth and final episode of the second series was pulled from transmission as its subject matter - Eddie and Richie living rough on Wimbledon Common - coincided with a horrific real-life murder at the same location. It was also missed out from repeat runs but finally surfaced a few weeks after the end of the third series in 1995.

The show is for mature viewers.......well, when i say mature i mean older, not mature as in 'we don't laugh at fart jokes'. therefore the younger audineces would probably not be looking at this home page, however if they did there would be no problems through navigation.
institutions
it is the bbc website so it obviously has other bbc websites being broadcasted on the page and links to other pages relating to various things. people who are into comedy, especially such vulgar comedy as this would find the site lacking in character. sure they get all the information of the show and future performences, but teh page is white and dull and doesn't show how funny the show can actually be.

there is a bottom quiz.......of which i got 100% right!!!! and you find that in fun and games section at the bottom. there is also stills from the shows and stage productions. this increases interactivity and good quality viewing.

the webpage replaces other forms of advertisement such as tv and magazines because it shows viewing times and passed productions and even shows information about future theatre production (of which i am going to no matter what!!)

we love youtube!!!

What Is YouTube?

  • YouTube is a way to get your videos out to the world .

features of youtube:

  • Upload, tag and share your videos worldwide

  • Browse thousands of original videos uploaded by community members

  • Find, join and create video groups to connect with people with similar interests

  • Customize your experience with playlists and subscriptions
YouTube is an American popular free video sharing website which lets users upload, view, and share video clips. Videos can be rated, and the average rating and the number of times a video has been watched are both published. this allows young film makers and other people who just want to have a bit of fun, to have their work rated and recieve feed back!!
The site is praised as one the most user friendly sites on the Internet. Unregistered users can watch most videos on the site while registered users have the ability to upload an unlimited number of videos. Related videos, determined by the title and tags, appear to the right of the video. In the second year, the site gave users the ability to post responses and subscribe to any registered user.[citation needed]

putting yourself out there!!!

Political candidates for the 2008 US Presidential election have been using YouTube as an outlet for advertising their candidacy. Voters can easily look up propaganda and make videos supporting or demoting presidential candidates of their own, specifically those for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
industry
Before being bought by Google, YouTube stated that its business model is advertising-based. Some industry commentators have speculated that YouTube's running costs — specifically the bandwidth required — may be as high as US$1 million per-month, thereby fueling criticisms that the company, like many Internet start-ups, did not have a viably implemented business model. Advertisements were launched on the site beginning in March 2006. In April, YouTube started using Google AdSense. YouTube subsequently stopped using AdSense. Given its traffic levels, video streams and pageviews, some have calculated that YouTube's potential revenues could be in the millions per month.
internet celebrities
YouTube's popularity has led to the creation of many YouTube Internet celebrities, popular individuals who have attracted significant publicity in their home countries from their videos. The most subscribed YouTube member, as of April 6, 2007, is lonelygirl15. For these users, the Internet fame has had various unexpected effects. By way of example, YouTube user and former receptionist Brooke Brodack from Massachusetts has been signed by NBC's Carson Daly for an 18-month development contract.

Band and music promotion
YouTube has also become a means of promoting bands and their music. One such example is OK Go which got a huge radio hit and an MTV Video Music Awards performance out of the treadmill video for Here It Goes Again. In the same light, a video broadcasting the Free Hugs Campaign with accompanying music by the Sick Puppies led to instant fame for both the band and the campaign, with more campaigns taking place in different parts of the world. The main character of the video, Juan Mann has also achieved fame, being interviewed on Australian news programs, even appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

Video format
YouTube's video playback technology is based on Macromedia's FlashPlayer 7 and uses the Sorenson Spark H.263 video codec. This technology allows YouTube to display videos with quality comparable to more established video playback technologies (such as Windows Media Player, Realplayer or Apple's Quicktime Player) that generally require the user to download and install a web browser plugin in order to watch video. Flash itself requires a plug-in, but the Flash 7 plug-in is generally considered to be present on approximately 90% of Internet-connected computers. Alternatively, users can use a number of websites to download the videos to their own computers.
YouTube converts videos into .FLV (Adobe Flash Video) format after uploading. The extension is then stripped from the file (Extension can be found again with TrID). The different files are stored in obscurely named subdomains, to make ripping the videos difficult.

what is blu-ray??
Blu-ray, also known as Blu-ray Disc (BD), is a next-generation optical disc format jointly developed by members of the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer and media manufacturers (including Apple, Dell, Hitachi,
HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson). The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD), as well as storing large amounts of data. The format offers more than five times the storage capacity of traditional DVDs and can hold up to 25GB on a single-layer disc and 50GB on a dual-layer disc. This extra capacity combined with the use of advanced video and audio codecs offers consumers an unprecedented HD experience.

Blu-ray is currently supported by more than 180 of the world's leading consumer electronics, personal computer, recording media, video game and music companies. The format also has broad support from the major movie studios as a successor to today's DVD format. In fact, seven of the eight major movie studios (Disney, Fox, Warner, Paramount, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) are supporting the Blu-ray format and five of them (Disney, Fox, Sony, Lionsgate and MGM) are releasing their movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. Many studios have also announced that they will begin releasing new feature films on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with DVD, as well as a continuous slate of catalog titles every month.
audiences:
again like dvd, the older audiences have found it hard to change from video. this is understandable because to swap to all these new found disks and players is expensive and time consuming. this is probably the only downside to the intoduction of new media, that you will keep having to buy new products to match the times. however the positive attrabutes are: less space used because of the amount of storage space on the disk boxsets and large packaging with trilogies and such are now reduced or eliminated. the audience will enjoy HD viewing for no extra cost (really). audio/sound is also improved. extras can now be viewed on the same disk as the movie, which basically leads to the first piont of storage space.
